MOTW 62: Big Van Vader & Bam Bam Bigelow vs The Steiners

I’m back for another ‘Wrestling Club’ edition for the 62nd instalment of our ‘Match of the Week’ illustration series & if you like yourself some big ol’ boys hittin’ each other real hard then this one’s for you!

This gargantuan gaijin classic took place on June 26th, 1992, on Day 8 of New Japan Pro Wrestling’s ‘NJPW Masters of Wrestling’ event, for the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championships at the home to big-time epic Japanese Wrestling that is Budokan Hall, Tokyo.

So this match was a key part of my most recent ‘Wrestling Club w/ Chris Things’ at The Scratch & a match that I think everyone quite enjoyed. So many things to love here; the always amazing ‘Big Bad & Dangerous’ duo of the Mastadon & Bam Bam, the non-stop action & power of the Steiner boys & just so many things that looked really painful. This was an absolute dream match that totally lived up to its’ billing.

The energy throughout was fantastic. This felt like a demolition derby that just kept going until one of the cars finally had enough. So many cool moments too! Some totally gnarly Vader-Bombs, an incredible Frankensteiner where Vader gets dumped right on his dome, Bammer busting out some way-cool stuff against these big, chunky lads & some tremendous Steinerlines & MASSIVE suplexes! WHAT MORE COULD YOU ASK FOR?!

Artists’ Note: It’s always so tough with tag matches to pick the moment as there’s so much cool stuff happening. I generally try to capture a vibe of the match in question. I really liked this one; a moment between the things to soak it all up. Building up the hot tag to the 'Dog-Faced Gremlin' (& WHAT a hot tag!) the 'Beast From The East' looking humongous & the 'Big Bad Booty Daddy' gathering his strength to power out of the enormous Sleeper-Hold. But there are still so many more moments I’d like to art of this one!
