Hi friends! I'm back, still running on fumes after last night's big opening night at The Scratch for the 71st edition of our 'Match of the Week' illustration series!
This absolutely tremendous 'Dos De Tres Caidas' all-time Lucha Libre classic took place back on March 6th, 2001 for CMLL at 'La Catedral De La Lucha Libre'; Arena Mexico.
So in addition to being the opening night of my big 2025 art exhibition, we also did an extra-special ALL Lucha edition of 'Wrestling Club w/ Chris Things'. I slapped together a whole bunch of Lucha matches that I totally adore but this is the one that took the cake for me!
Two of my all time Luchador favs - one an all time-great tecnico, the other an all-time great rudo. The chemistry between these two as well as overall levels of electric charisma (& overall 'vibes' in general) was just off the charts. Just a perfect example of 2/3 falls done really, really well. The in-ring story & drama was so great. Crazy hot crowd too!
We also get a totally amazing campy pre-match intro segment of Wagner in his doctor's office, being brought some sort of scans by his nurse assistant, only for them to somehow end up being a picture of Atlantis (that he was understandably very aggravated by!)
Everything about this rules so hard. This is exactly what I'd show to someone to explain why & how much I adore the world of Mexican Wrestling. This is the Consejo Mundial De Lucha Libre that created a life-long Lucha love affair for this Aussie Gringo.
Please go out of your way to watch this match RIGHT NOW! Highly recommended viewing.
Artists' Note: So I legitimately did this one start to finish in the early hours of the morning after getting home from the big Scratch evening last night. I was quite drunk & extremely tired after all the art show prep these past few weeks. I think this captures some of that frantic energy in a way. It's a bit janky but still kinda cool in its' own kinda way.
