Back again for a Sydney addition to our little ol’ ‘Match of the Week’ illustration series. I’ve just landed for this weekends’ Oddities & Curiosities Expo & a late night/early travel morning aint stopping our regularly scheduled programming!

This terrific Lucha Libre Mexicana showcase took place just a few weeks back, on November 29th as the final to the ‘Torneo La Leyenda Azul 2024’ at CMLL’s 'La Catedral De La Lucha Libre; Arena Mexico.

So first of all, shout out to Richard of VHS Lab for getting onto this bad boy early! I found this match super-interesting for a few reasons. Obviously I’m a big-time fan of our resident Lucha Libre Wizard, but it’s more than that. From my years watching Lucha, I’ve seen quite a few Mistico matches. The dude is just a generational star & 1st ballot hall-of-famer in anyones’ book. But a dude who has a signature formula for sure. And it’s a great one, but I’ve seen it many times.

I really loved this because, not only did Hechicero bring us an absolutely classic ‘Mistico match’ but he brought out a little something different from 'El Rey De Plata Y Oro' in the process. We actually saw Mistico break out some Llaveo action to conquer the Maestro! …That Octopus Hold was so badass!

All in all, Hechicero showed once again, exactly why he’s my ‘Wrestler of the Year’ as things stand. This felt totally epic & everything I want out of a big-time, classic Arena Mexico main event.

Artists’ Note: I was so stoked to get to draw Hechicero once again as we reach the pointy end of 2024. This one had quite a few really cool visuals but this one took the cake for me. I also thought Mistico’s special commemorative Blue Demon mask was WAY COOL!
