MOTW 77: Samoa Joe vs. Necro Butcher
“M.O.T.W. #77: Samoa Joe vs. Necro Butcher” - ink & digital illustration
Well hello there friends! I'm back for the 77th edition of our 'Match of the Week' illustration series & I think this weeks' a doozy!
This unforgettable, guttural display took place on June 11th, 2005 at IWA Mid-South's “Something To Prove” event, as the massively influential company journeyed out to the Indie Wrestling hotbed that was the Tristate area scene at the time - in the heart of it all; South Philly's ECW Arena.
So this was the official 'main event' of my latest 'Wrestling Club at the Scratch' evening & one that I've been looking forward to playing since I started this thing. Honestly speaking, I don't think anything can top this, so I felt it was the perfect show-closer. Thankfully there were not any youngin's in attendance!
Ever since I heard the legend of this match & first got my filthy 'snuff-wrestling' mitts on it, I was in love with it. Just the height of realism, intensity, brutality & sheer awe when it comes to Professional Wrestling. I've heard some folks call this the greatest match ever & I wouldn't argue against it as I've still never seen anything quite like it all these years later. ...like I definitely don't think wrestlers need to chase this ideal & push things to this level of extremes but as a self-contained piece of art, I'm so happy this match exists.
A match that makes you feel dirty for watching it in the most glorious of ways! Thank you Joe & thank you Necro!! I'll never not love this wonderful freak-show!
Artists' Note: It was way cool to have another go at this for the first time in quite a few years since illustrating it for the original Way of the Blade book. Was a fun challenge to approach it slightly differently & to maybe see a little evolution of my art since that time.
ENJOY!!
